GRI has carried out an engineering safety study in collaboration with the University of Wollongong to assess the structural integrity of GRI's Active Furnace Isolation Chamber (AFIC) design for radioactive materials containment. This case study simulates an AFIC being dropped from a 2.6 m in height in an accident scenario. A high speed camera at 2000 frames per second was used to record the drop test, with impact testing using four strain gauges. The entire test was witnessed by Llyod's Register Australia to ensure our process complied with client's quality requirements.
